- Abstract
The article reports on increasing rate of mental illness in older people in the U.S. during 1960s, which is the third ranked, cause of chronic illness in the nation. It discusses various factors responsible for this increases including less selection of people living to middle age and beyond and that this allows more people to develop degenerative diseases with accompanying psychiatric disorder. Another factor is the predominance of organic psychoses and low rates of discharge as compared to other mental illness. It discusses a study conducted by the American Psychiatric Association on patients above 65 in public hospitals. It further discusses brain syndrome and its symptoms.
