- Abstract
Self as an existing truth or a constructed notion has time and again been questioned and investigated but never reached a consensus front. What is Self? What is Other? How do we know who we are? How do we see ourselves? Or others? How does 'The Self' affect our Identity? Are 'Self' and 'Personal Identity' one and the same? Let's unfurl these existential questions of all times through varied theories of experiential, narrative and spiritual self from the standpoints of Dan Zahavi and other philosophers. The idea of Self is what we think of ourselves, how we experience everything and make sense of it whereas the idea of our Identity is how we want ourselves to be perceived by others which becomes a way to define ourselves. Identity is multifaceted. It can be our own, but it can also be a way to recognize someone else's identity. The paper aims to explore together the ideas of self, identity, and alterity in a way that it gives rise to a theory of multidimensional self.
