The article presents the history of Birmingham, England, part of a series of local histories of the cities and towns of England. It is notable as being one of Great Britain's largest industrial centers, boasting more than 1,500 different trades. The city is host of large industries including Austin Motor Works, the Cadbury confectionery company and the banking and insurance company Lloyds. Topics considered include Joseph Priestley, founder of the Unitarian Movement, the city's involvement in the English Civil War, and English philosopher Erasmus Darwin.
