- Abstract
Salicylic acid (SA) and Methyl Jasmonate (MeJA), two signaling compounds were used for the treatment of cell suspension cultures of Glycyrrhiza glabra. The optimization of growth and glycyrrhizin accumulation was studied in callus cultures of Glycyrrhiza. Various concentrations of SA and MeJA were tried individually and in combinations for the enhancement of glycyrrhizin in cell suspension cultures of callus obtained from Glycyrrhiza glabra. Elicitors SA and MeJA were found to individually enhance glycyrrhizin production in cell suspension cultures of Glycyrrhiza, but when administered in combination a remarkable enhancement was observed in glycyrrhizin production. Higher leaching of Glycyrrhizin was observed when both the signaling compounds were used as elicitors. The endogenous level of Glycyrrhizin production was higher with MeJA in comparison to SA. 100 µM MeJAalong with 200 µM SA is most efficient in glycyrrhizin production on 15th day of culture inoculation. These results indicate that application of elicitors can enhance the capacity of Glycyrrhiza glabra suspension cultures to produce glycyrrhizin.
