- Abstract
Objective: To analyze clinical sexology research in Latin American journals of clinical psychology indexed in the Scopus database (2004-2017). Methodology: The SCImago Journal Rank indicator for 2017 was adopted to determine which are the Latin American journals of clinical psychology according to this index. Thus, a list of seven scientific journals was obtained: Terapia Psicológica, Revista Argentina de Clínica Psicológica, Revista Latinoamericana de Psicopatología Fundamental, Psicología Clínica, Salud Mental, Avances en Psicología Latinoamericana, Tempo Psicoanalítico. The following empirical indicators were analyzed: Authorship (productivity, geographical and disciplinary affiliation), Citation (most cited authors and texts) and Content (predominant themes). Results: 2502 scientific articles have been published in the period covered, of which 0.63% (16 articles) corresponds to clinical sexology, as defined in this paper. They have been issued mostly in the journal Terapia Psicológica and Salud Mental. These articles were published by psychologists from countries like Mexico, Chile, and Spain. Regarding the contents, female sexual dysfunctions over male dysfunctions, psychometric studies of instruments that assess constructs related to sexuality, and also two investigations that refer to the efficacy of psychotherapeutic treatment to remit sexual symptoms stand out. In relation to citation indicators, authors and classic texts of sexual therapy are used, as well as important personalities within the current discipline at the Ibero-American and international levels. Discussion: Clinical sexology is not represented in Latin American clinical psychology publications. The advance of sexual medicine in recent decades may have led to the withdrawal of psychology professionals from the area of clinical sexology. It is considered relevant to recover this space by psychologists.
