- Abstract
Although relations between Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union developed at an unprecedented and currently hardly imaginable pace after World War II, at that time those interested in technical or pedagogical fields applied for the possibility of studying in the USSR. The author of this paper was one of the few, if not the only Czechoslovak student to learn Sinology at the Department of Oriental Studies at Leningrad University, probably the most crucial centre of Chinese studies in the countries of the so-called Eastern bloc. Globally recognized pedagogical and research capacities such as N. A. Speshnev (1931–2011), S. E. Yakhontov (1926–2018) and especially T. N. Nikitina (1929–2015) therefore became his guides on the thorny path of first understanding, later translation and finally critical evaluation of the Chinese text in its entire historical breadth from the oldest scriptures to the present. The Leningrad School of Soviet Sinology is thus a term that still earns well-deserved respect: after all, A. A. Dragunov’s contribution to describing the functions of the Chinese language left an indelible mark not only in the works of European researchers, but also significantly influenced Chinese research on modern Chinese grammar. This paper is dedicated to the organization of the study and personal experience, which allowed the graduate of this study program in just five years a deep penetration into the absolute foundation of any sinological effort – mastery of the Chinese text.
