- Abstract
The article reports on the availability of the first emergency contraception product with approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration, to women by prescription. The Preven Emergency Contraceptive Kit consists of four birth control pills containing 0.25 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.05 mg of ethinyl estradiol apiece, along with a home pregnancy test and a detailed patient information booklet. A woman who has had unprotected sex or who has had a condom break may begin using the kit within 72 hours of intercourse by taking the pregnancy test; if she is not pregnant, she takes two of the pills immediately and the other two 12 hours later.
