- Abstract
The article reports on the start of the research trials of mifepristone as a medical abortion technique in the U.S., according to the Population Council, the holder of the U.S. patent to the drug. The research is expected to involve between 12 to 20 clinics across the U.S. that will offer early abortions with a combination of the antiprogestrin mifepristone and oral prostaglandin misoprostol. The purpose of the research is to help determine the safety, efficacy and acceptability of performing abortions nonsurgically and it will also evaluate any differences between providing the drugs within 49, 56 or 63 days of the last menstrual period of a woman.
