- Title
New AIFS book on youth suicide prevention.
- Abstract
The article informs that the Australian Institute of Family Studies is pleased to announce the release of the book "Valuing Young Lives"--the first, overview volume in a series a five reports that comprise the Institute's independent evaluation of the National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy. "Valuing Young Lives," by Penny Mitchell, research fellow at the Australian Institute of Family Studies, concludes that implementation and evaluation of a wide range of suicide prevention activities, under the Federal Government's National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy, has substantially developed the evidence base available to inform the development of suicide prevention activities in Australia, and enhanced capacity to implement appropriate activities within a range of service sectors. During the 1990s, increasing rates of suicide among Australia's young people became the focus of both community and government concern. The Australian Government responded to these concerns with the National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy, which ran from 1995 to 1999. A total of $31 million was allocated to the Strategy of which $13 million was allocated across over 40 demonstration projects and the remainder for rural youth counselling, parenting programs, education and training of professionals, research activities, and enhancing telephone counselling services.
