- Abstract
This paper addresses one of the most important topics related with preschool education. It refers to competencies, skills and knowledge that children must develop to start their academic background in primary education, particularly with as regards formal literacy issues. In fact, that refers to Early Literacy and the way that preschool can boost this kind of literacy. In the present paper the basic conceptual aspects of the formal literacy and early literacy are discussed, explaining their importance to the psychological and academic development. In a second section, the emphasis is on activities that can promote the development of initial literacy skills in children, and how parents and preschool teachers can carry out a series of activities literacy. The third section presents several studies in the field, in order to illustrate the type of research that has been done, the instruments used for the assessment of the participants and also a number of methodological issues that can guide research and procedures pre-academic intervention to promote psychological development. Some concluding remarks about the topic are made, particularly on research findings in the field.
