- Abstract
Everyone who has studied the centuries covered by the label "Late Antiquity" (of which more anon) has benefitted from Brown's own interpretations of particular aspects of this period, especially the ways in which Christianity transformed religious and social behaviour in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. Like Augustine of Hippo's construction of identity in his Confessions and I Retractationes i , Peter Brown's representation of his intellectual development up to 1987 in I Journeys of the Mind i achieves its own "special balance between self-assertion, self-fashioning and the social and intellectual discipline within which he writes".
