- Abstract
Internet-related addictions in youth Internet-related addictions are often studied in population samples and therefore we prefer the term problematic internet use instead of the clinical term addiction. These behaviors are usually related to specific applications on the internet. In Dutch adolescents, the prevalence of problematic internet use is about 4 to 6 percent, whereas in addiction care there are only few people in treatment. Both problematic gaming and social media use are related to, among other things, low psychosocial wellbeing and academic underachievement. Because of the increase in internet availability in public space we expect an increase in problematic social media use.
