The article presents an interview with Claude M. Steele, provost at Columbia University. When asked what a stereotype threat is Steele says that it refers to a person being in a situation in which a negative stereotype about one of his or her identities is relevant. He comments on classes that he teaches at Columbia University. Steele believes that stereotype threat is an outgrowth of inter-subjective awareness.
