- Abstract
A biography of Edward Josef Stark, cantor and reader of Congregation Emanu-El of San Francisco, California from 1893-1913, is presented. He was born on March 29, 1856 in Hohenems, Austria. He produced operettas when he joined the Germania Quartett Club in 1884. Printed in late 1913 was his publication of synagogue music, "Sefer Anim Zemiroth." Among his works are the memorial hymn, "Why Art Thou Cast Down" for chorus with cello and harp obligato and organ accompaniment, and "Day of God."
