- Title
Davida Malo's Unpublished Account of Keōpūolani.
- Authors
Langlas, Charles; Lyon, Jeffrey
- Abstract
The article explores the account of Hawaiian historian Davida Malo on the life of Keōpūolani, wife of Kamehameha who was one of the ruling chiefs of Hawaii, and her role in shaping Hawaiian politics. It highlights portions that deviate from other accounts of Keōpūolani's life such as the status of her relationship with Kamehameha. Malo's account touches on the number of children conceived by high ranking women during the pre-Christian period as well as the nature of their marriage. The practice of high-ranking women having more than one husband is also discussed.
