- Title
Expression of Concern: Medical findings and symptoms in infants exposed to witnessed or admitted abusive shaking: A nationwide registry study.
- Abstract
This document is an expression of concern regarding an article published in PLoS ONE. Concerns were raised about the study design, contextualization, and clinical implications of the article. The study used a retrospective design that cannot establish causality or test the hypothesis that shaking causes certain injuries. The article also lacks statistical tests for association between shaking and these injuries. The PLoS ONE Editorial Board concluded that some of the conclusions in the article are not supported and that it should be considered a descriptive study. The corresponding author clarified that the article does not indicate that shaking cannot cause certain injuries, but rather that violent shaking does not always result in demonstrable medical findings. The author provided corrections to the article, addressing specific sections and clarifying the findings. The PLoS ONE Editors issued this expression of concern to inform readers about the concerns regarding the study design and interpretation, and to advise caution when interpreting certain sections of the article.
