- Abstract
This article elaborates a line of thought on the proliferation of titles in the humourous trilogy by Enrique Jardiel Poncela. By following the theoretical postulates put forward by acknowledged specialists in the study of modern titles, we have observed this subject from a variety of angles. With regard to syntax, the analysis underscores the author's determination to refute traditional modes of title attribution and so maintain his endeavour to defeat stereotyping and conventionalism. With respect to pragmatic semiotics, it will be demonstrated how the profile of an “ideal" reader emerges from the titles, as Jardiel propounds in the numerous statements made. In conclusion and from a purely aesthetic point of view, the analysis illustrates that titles are a pre-encapsulation outlining an ambitious plan to renovate the Romanesque approach, located in between tradition and modernity, placing both the author and his work within the vast ambit of the Spanish avant-garde movement.
