- Abstract
Periodontal diseases are multifactorial, and many etiological agents are suggested to play a role in their etiopathogenesis. It was a matter of debate as to whether bacteria helps virus or virus helps bacteria in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. It is now believed that both bacteria and virus help each other in the initiation and progression of periodontal disease. Studies have shown that Herpesvirus-1, Cytomegalovirus and Epstein - Barr virus interact with periodontal pathogens in a synergistic manner, produce a greater pathogenic effect than the sum of the individual agents. This article provides an insight into the bacterial-viral interaction in periodontal diseases. Evidence of a significant role of bacterial-viral pathogenic interaction in periodontitis might revolutionize existing strategies to diagnose, prevent, and treat the disease.
