- Abstract
The article discusses the importance of critical appraisal skills for general practitioners (GPs) in navigating the evidence base of scientific research. It highlights the role of trusted authorities in condensing research into usable guidelines for GPs. However, the General Medical Council requires doctors to keep their knowledge up to date, including their ability to appraise medical research. The article suggests strategies for GPs to maintain critical appraisal skills, such as reading Stuart Ritchie's book "Science Fictions: Exposing Fraud, Bias, Negligence and Hype in Science." The book explores the flaws in scientific research, particularly in the field of biomedicine, and discusses the ethical implications of these flaws. It provides an accessible and relevant resource for GPs to update their critical appraisal skills.
