The article argues that the delegation to magistrate judges of felony-guilty-plea proceedings, though beneficial to district judges, raises concerns of fairness and constitutionality for criminal defendants. Topics discussed include magistrate judges' authority to conduct misdemeanor trials; the Federal Magistrates Act; history of the federal magistrate system; and validity of magistrate judge administration of felony-guilty-plea proceedings.
