- Abstract
The Lithuanian Cultural Institute (Lietuvių kultūros institutas, LKI), established in 1981, is part of the German network of scholarly publications. The LKI holdings have been listed in the electronic catalogues housed with the Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog (KVK), allowing to access the major international liberary catalogues. The KVK includes some 10 500 monographs and 230 periodicals of the LKI. However, some 300 journals have not yet been bound and catalogued. The LKI library contains more than 3000 books published outside Lithuania. Most of them were acquired from private libraries of Dr. Jonas Grinius, Dr. Albertas Gerutis and Father Alfonsas Bernatonis. The majority of them can be dated after 1952. Available are also the immigrant publications that appeared in North America before 1919 and in 1945-1952 in Germany; less numerous are books published in Lithuania Minor (in total 591 publications). Whilst preparing for this conference, I had no alternative but to check the presumed rare book collections in the electronic catalogues of the LIBIS and the KVK and, not being able to locate them here, to continue searching in available bibliographies. From over 700 publications, three were not accessible in any international library, and two were not mentioned in any bibliography at all. Three more publications were found outside Lithuania, and none of them is available in Lithuania. Nine works are available (were cited) once only in Lithuania or beyond, 18 are catalogued twice, 13 are mentioned three times. I was unable to examine the publications in private or smaller libraries as these have not found their way into electronic libraries. I am also unable to establish which books are requested more frequently, nor is it possible to evaluate them according to their content or other categories. I can only say from experience that the works that appear outside of Lithuania, with rare exceptions, are not in high demand in Germany.
