- Abstract
The article offers information on the romance genre and its subgenres. The five primary subgenres of the romance genre include contemporary, historical, Regency, suspense and paranormal. The traditional Regency romance is frequently considered as the most elite of the romance subgenres. Historical romance is a combination of historical fiction and romance. Contemporary romance involves stories of modern women who are living their own lives, following their own dreams and building a future for themselves. Paranormal romance uses the paranormal as the umbrella under which speculative fiction combines with romance. Romantic suspense originated from the Gothic novels of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
