- Abstract
The article examines the manuscript "Le diable au XIXème siècle," by Léo Taxil, and its impact on France during the nineteenth century. The manuscript was able to take advantage of the growing political conflict and social tension in France. Written was a spectacular hoax, called the Palladium Affair, that lasted over a decade. It narrated an alleged global satanic conspiracy led by Freemasonry against legitimate civil and religious order. It combined political polemic with pulp fiction adventure.
