- Title
Willoughby's Apology.
- Authors
Carroll, C. Durning
- Abstract
The article offers an interpretation of how the apology of the fictitious character John Willoughby is perceived by heroine Elinor Dashwood in the novel "Sense and Sensibility," by Jane Austen. Willoughby's apology is compared with the apology by Edward Ferrars whose wrongful conduct is judged by Elinor as mere impudence after he apologized for his relationship with Lucy Steele. Willoughby apologizes after he did not make an expected marriage proposal to Marianne Dashwood. The moral virtues associated by Austen to sense and sensibility are tackled.
