It is striking how central sport is throughout Roth's American Trilogy as well as Exit Ghost. While sport is (humorously) glorified throughout the novels, this essay will show how the narrator shifts in his perception of athleticism and, in effect, masculinity, from admiring it unquestioningly to dismissing it confusedly as a threat.
