- Title
Specialist glass enhances indoor crop growth.
- Abstract
A study conducted by the University of Lincoln and Pilkington United Kingdom has found that specialist glass designed for commercial greenhouses can increase crop yield by over a third. The research examined the impact of different glass products on plant growth, light transmission, and temperature within glasshouses. Lettuce and basil were grown in two separate glasshouses, with produce grown under the specialist glass weighing 35% more than produce grown under standard glass. The specialist glass, called Pilkington HortiHaze, maintains light transmission and provides an even distribution of light to the plants without compromising the amount of light entering through the glass. The study highlights the importance of using specialized materials in greenhouse construction to enhance indoor crop growth and contribute to food security.
