- Abstract
The article focuses on the representation of black African characters in Portuguese theater from the 15th to the early 17th centuries. The author discusses the black stereotypes used in Portuguese writing, analyzes how black language was depicted to portray a poor understanding of Iberian languages, and explores the plays written by Gil Vicente and Antonio Ribeiro Chiado.
