- Title
HIP HOP AND THE NEW JIM CROW: RAP MUSIC'S INSIGHT ON MASS INCARCERATION.
- Authors
Tibbs, Donald F.
- Abstract
The article examines how the book "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander and rap music reflect the issue of mass incarceration in the U.S. Topics discussed include the book's claim that white supremacy lives on in the country's criminal justice system which has historically pursued young black men and its argument that the current policing system perpetuates racial violence. Rap music's exploration of a racialized punishment system beginning in the early 1990s is mentioned.
