- Abstract
The article discusses the nineteenth-century American autobiography "The Lieutenant Nun" a tale of Catalina de Erauso, a Basque nun who escaped to South America after dressing as a man, becoming a Spanish Soldier who traveled to Peru and Chile, then became a gambler, and reportedly killed her brother in a duel. Supposedly, the original account was lost from archives during the late 17th century, although the story remained as fragments published in various languages beginning in the 19th century. Topics include whether the story is truly an autobiography or fiction, archival sources of the tale, and how archives influence historical studies.
