- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate safety and efficacy of cryotherapy as a potential treatment in inflammatory acne. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A clinical controlled study was done from November 2016 to April 2017 in subjects with inflammatory acne in the face, using a noninvasive cooling device (CoolSculpting System) during a maximum period of 5 minutes at -15°C in one side of the face, the other side was used as control. Two treatments with an interval of 4 weeks were performed. Adverse events were monitored to assess safety. Treated area was evaluated using digital photography and VISIA pre and 1, 4, 8 and 12 weeks after first treatment. All patients and investigators were assessed for satisfaction questionnaires. RESULTS: Incremental significant reduction of the inflammatory lesions of acne was measured in all the subjects one week and one month after the first treatment, and even better improvement was recorded one month after the second treatment. Although the number of lesions increased by the third month follow up visit, all subjects exhibited less inflammatory lesions than at the beginning of the study. No significant adverse events were observed. CONCLUSION: The significant reduction observed in the number of lesions suggests that cryotherapy should be further studied and considered a non-invasive, alternative treatment of inflammatory acne.
