- Authors
Serra, Pedro
- Abstract
Presents a literary criticism of the book "A Cidade e as Serras" or "The City and the Mountains" by Eça de Queirós. The author discusses aspects of utopian socialism in the book and comments on how the book was influenced by the decline of liberalism and realism in the nineteenth century. He suggests the book's main character, Jacinto, represents paternalistic socialism and that the city of Paris, France in the book represents a form modernity that Portugal resisted.
