- Authors

- Abstract
The article presents the author's opinions regarding a mastery learning course in English literature that was implemented at the Beirut University College in Beirut, Lebanon. After studying the available literature about mastery learning, none of which was on English literature, the article author decided to plan with a group of students a mastery course in English. The author discusses the results of an experimental study in learning for mastery approach that was conducted from 1972 to 1974 at the Beirut University College. The primary objective of the mastery learning course in English was that students must gain an understanding of specific literary movements, genres, recurrent themes and literary styles. The students must also learn to appreciate the variety and richness of English literature. To establish that the mastery learning approach was effective in humanities courses, recall tests and questionnaires were devised for students to evaluate both the cognitive and affective areas of the mastery learning course.
