- Authors

- Abstract
Legends are normally told, but they can also be translated into behaviour. This particular means of ‘legend-telling’ has been termed ‘ostension’ or ‘ostensive action’ and has become an important aspect in the study of modern legends. In this article, examples of re-enacted legends in pre-industrial Scandinavia and England are presented. They include variants of legends about ghosts, people who pretend to be dead, supernatural beings like the farm spirit and the farm guardian, the wild host, disputes about church sites, and the army of the Huns.
