- Abstract
The article examines the theft of a portrait of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, painted by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, from Great Britain's National Gallery. Emphasis is given to the effects of the theft on the development of British larceny laws. The criminal investigation surrounding the theft is described, as is the trial of the painting's thief, Kempton Bunton. The author explains that because Bunton was largely found not guilty of several charges leveled against him, British Parliament adjusted its laws dealing with the removal of objects open to the public.
