- Abstract
A biography of Oglala Sioux leader Red Cloud (Lakota: Mahpiya Lúta) is presented, with focus given to his successful war, called Red Cloud's War, against the U.S. Army in the 1860s. Red Cloud opposed the influx of white settlers onto Sioux and Cheyenne lands following the opening of the Bozeman Trail. He led an attack against Colonel Henry B. Carrington's men at Fort Phil Kearny, Wyoming, and later lobbied for better treatment of the Sioux at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
