- Abstract
It is extremely important that younger generations properly understand and attend to the needs of our ever-growing geriatric community. A significant part of delivering care to these older adults is ensuring that their quality of life is not diminished, particularly for those who are placed in long-term care. Despite certain stereotypes about the asexuality of older adults, recent research has shown that geriatric patients not only desire sex, but such intimate contact also noticeably improves their quality of life. Nevertheless, there are recognized legal and social obstacles to healthy, safe sexual activity within such a vulnerable population. This note will outline the importance of fostering healthy sexual relationships in geriatric long-term care, while considering the specific challenges that such a task presents to patients with dementia and patients who are members of the LGBT community.
