- Abstract
The article discusses the age-related changes in body composition, such as loss of lean mass and increased adiposity, and the redistribution of adipose tissue to ectopic depots. These changes contribute to an increased risk of cardiometabolic and geriatric-related disorders. The authors explore the link between age-related changes in skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, and mitochondrial function, as well as the role of physical activity in preventing ectopic adipose accumulation and metabolic decline. They find that physical activity is positively associated with mitochondrial function and negatively correlated with the volume of adipose tissue in various depots. The results suggest that physical activity can prevent age-related fat accumulation and declines in mitochondrial function.
