The article discusses the barriers to solid organ transplantation in low-resource settings and explores the role of fostering altruism in overcoming these barriers. It highlights the reliance on living organ donation in these settings and the misconceptions surrounding brain death and deceased organ donation. The paper also mentions the use of altruistic unrelated living kidney or liver donation, particularly among Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka. The article emphasizes the importance of education, cultural sensitivity, and adherence to ethical guidelines in improving access to organ transplants.
