- Abstract
The article offers information on the economic and political conditions in Russia during the global financial crisis in 2009. The weaknesses in the Russian economy, including the reliance in the seemingly inexhaustible supply of natural resources, were uncovered by the crisis. The need for innovation and modernization has been the highlight in the speeches of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev. There has been no change in the numbers of political and unexplained murders, or in the sphere of international relations of the country in 2009. The symbolic observations about the end of 2009 in Russia include the death of politician Yegor Gaidar and the 130th anniversary of the birth of Josef Stalin, voted as the third most significant person in Russian history.
