- Abstract
Alpha-1-antitrypsin (A1-AT) deficiency is an uncommon disorder. Partial A1-AT deficiency affects about one in every 50 Americans, and severe deficiency affects about one in 2500. Panniculitis associated with A1-AT deficiency is very rare. There has been a report of successful treatment of a case of A1-AT deficiency-associated panniculitis with plasma exchange therapy. If cases of panniculitis are really the result of a combined deficiency of both A1-AT and A1-ACT, the use of plasma may be superior to the use of purified A1-AT concentrate.
