- Abstract
Skin manifestations of lupus erythematosus (LE) are classified as LE specific or nonspecific but disease-related skin lesions. Among the nonspecific skin lesions, papular and nodular mucinosis is a distinctive, though unusual, cutaneous manifestation occurring in patients with either discoid or SLE. Dermal mucin deposition is a common histologic finding in cutaneous LE. It is unusual, however, lot the mucin to be present in a sufficient quantity to produce lesions that are clinically detectable in the absence of surface changes. Cutaneous mucin deposition in patients with papulonodular LE skin lesions is associated with increased glycosaminoglycan production by dermal fibroblasts.
