- Abstract
The article discusses the U.S. Supreme Court case "Abington School District v. Schempp," which ultimately declared Bible-teaching in U.S. public schools to be unconstitutional, with focus given to the cases' main plaintiff, Abington High School student and future physicist Ellery Schempp of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After describing the history of Bible education in U.S. public schools, noting the role of educator Horace Mann, the author explains the Schempp family's Unitarian background, which largely informed Schempp's opposition. The involvement of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in the case is detailed, and the litigation in the case is described.
