- Abstract
Blood transfusion is an indispensable aid to the treatment of cancer patients. On the other hand, it involves a serious risk of bacterial sepsis. Platelet concentrates (PCs) are the blood components with the highest incidence of bacterial contamination, being responsible for most of the septic reactions to transfusion. In this study, we assessed various conventional culture methods for the detection of bacterial contamination in PCs. In all, 691 samples of PCs (665 random donor platelets and 26 apheresis platelets) from the Blood Center of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (HEMORGS), were analyzed. We employed qualitative, quantitative and daily growth culture techniques, which revealed that 2.32% of the samples analyzed, all from random donor platelets, were contaminated. The qualitative methodology performed best. This result obliges us to reinforce the importance of performing pre-transfusion bacteriological screening on all samples of PCs, to reduce the risk of sepsis.
