- Abstract
The present paper compares the acoustic properties of Urdu vowels produced by Pashto and Punjabi L1 speakers. The oral monophthongal vowel productions of three male speakers from each language were recorded and acoustic phonetic analyses of vowel formant frequencies were performed. The results show that both the Pashto and Punjabi speakers have influence of their native languages on the production of their Urdu oral vowel sounds. It is found that Pashto speakers overlap among front as well as back Urdu vowels while Punjabi speakers overlap only among their back vowels. This suggests that L1 transfer limits the speakers of these languages from acquiring some of the characteristics of the pure Urdu oral vowels.
