The author discusses the administrative involvement of the Commonwealth Government of Australia in affairs involving the Australian Indigenous population. Topics explored include the development and implementation of Indigenous policies by the government following the 1967 Australian Referendum, the establishment and functions of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs (DAA) until its replacement in 1990 by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC), and the Indigenous-specific economic programs and services of ATSIC that have been relocated to other functional organisations.
