- Authors

- Abstract
The sweatbath or steam house to Azlecs functioned as a place of recreation or purification, used by both sexes for bodily cleansing both practical and ritual, the later including post-purlum bathing for women and solidarity rites before communal action for men. The focus of this article is a substantially older Preclassic sweatbath of more complex plan, discovered in March 200 on the east side of a courtyard at Cuello, Belize, which appears to be the earliest construction on that spot. Sweatbath design clearly evolved over the centuries, Cuello at 900 BC has an exterior firebox with a channel funnelling heat into the steam chamber.
