- Abstract
Gandhi is the culmination of Indian thought and morality. Gandhi loved and lived for the basic principles of the Jainism. His English writings are deeply influenced by Shrimad Raichand (a Jain philosopher's) life. Gandhi's views on education are fully governed by principal of Jainism. Gandhi pointed out, "Education for life, education through life and education throughout life." "Earning while learning" was the motto of Gandhi's vocational education. Child will learn it by doing. He strongly opposed the western mode of education that emphasized more on the acquisition of knowledge. Gandhi practiced principles of Jainism to build a strong character. He asked the student to lead a self-disciplined and self-resistant life which is the basic requirement of Jain way of life. Character building through education was a prime concern for Gandhi. Gandhi believed that in order to solve the problem of intolerance the students should be given the religious education and once they get knowledge of religions, it would be convenient for them to take "self-help" from the religion. According to Gandhi, limited sex education should be given to the students to avoid misleading information they get from unworthy sources. He advocated the practice of celibacy the fifth principle of Jainism to students which will give them a feeling of "self- confidence". Mahatma Gandhi was the greatest exponent of non-violence in modern times. Though he gave it a fresh and up-to-date orientation; the seeds of his doctrines on education and life are to be traced in Jainism rather than in any other Indian creed. Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man. Religion is the manifestation of the divinity already in man. Therefore the duty of the teacher in both cases is to remove all obstructions from the way.
