- Abstract
The article focuses on the role played by German grimoires which are manuals for dark magic in the conjure tradition in Pennsylvania. It states that German grimoires originated in the state, wherein during the early 18th century, Germans migrated to the state seeking agricultural land. It cites that German publishers issued books or grimoires of household remedies for farmers including "Albertus Magnus: Approved & Verified Both Sympathetic & Natural Egyptian Secrets, for Man & Beast." It notes that conjure or goopher is a volume of magical methods that has the purpose of bringing healing and prosperity. Conjure doctors used Pennsylvania German grimoires to cater to the evolving needs of magic practitioners and clients.
