- Title
"The Unfortunate Major André": Washington Irving's Original Ichabod Crane.
- Authors
Thompson, Terry W.
- Abstract
In this article, the author argues that author Washington Irving based his character Ichabod Crane, from the short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," on English spy Major John André. The author explains Irving's deep interest in André's failed incursion into New York State's Hudson River Valley during the U.S. Revolutionary War and his role in U.S. General Benedict Arnold's treacherous plot to surrender Fortress West Point, New York, to British forces.
