- Abstract
The art of the students of Kaunas School of Art and the "Ars" group is an exceptional phenomenon in Kaunas life. After Kaunas became the temporary capital, the aim of the school was to prepare artists who would create not only professional and modern art, but also „national art". Thus, the Kaunas Art School during the third decade of the 20th century, while still under the influence of neo-romantic aesthetics, implanted a firm foundation for the academic preparation of artists; one that during the fourth decade of the 20th century gave birth to the national school of art. Being not strictly separate from modernism in a broad sense, the Kaunas Art School also provided an impulse to the modern "Ars" group. The Kaunas School of Art - the contemporary Kaunas Art Institute (KAI) carefully preserved the traditions of national art, modernism and expressionism. The expressionistic art works of the students of this school and the later art works of its teachers constitute the basis of the collection of the National Art Museum of M. K. Čiurlionis (not forgetting the works of interwar school of art and "Ars" representatives). The traditions of "Ars" artists are felt strongest in the art of the middlegeneration artists. This period is characterized by a political turning-point that strongly affected the artists. The artists, who did not want to reflect the romanticized and urbanized reality, withdrew into themselves, and expressed this state with dramatic expressions of painting. The art groups "Angis" and "Post Ars" emerged at this date. Historically, both the formation of the groups and their daring search for innovation in art are very close to the situation of interwar art. The artists did not wish to favour the requests of official art and, as a result, united. Support for their creation came in the form of their innovative, daring and expressive art. Furthermore, quite a few of those artists worked or still work as teachers in the Kaunas Art Institute. This, in a way, directly assures the succession of the traditions of Kaunas School of Art and the artists of "Ars" . However, at the same time a question arises: is the institute ready to accept innovation and does it not appear too pragmatic in its dedication to preserve traditions? In truth, the KAI has made a lot of effort in its realization of an innovative curriculum. A few such steps are the foundation of the department of design in 1996 and the studio of inter-disciplinary art, which was founded in 2002. However, Kaunas Art Institute has still not raised bright personalities. While it is true that the article focuses much of its attention on the situation of fine arts, it should be observed that the situation of the applied arts is in a slightly better state: in the fields of glass, ceramics, and especially, textiles fresh creative winds can be felt.
